Tools

Tools let you track and document the tools, equipment, and fixtures required to assemble your harness, such as crimp tools and insertion tools, directly in your drawings.

Creating a Tool

A Tool is a design type, like a Connector or a Wire. In the Tool design's Assembly tab, you can specify its Tool Type, Part Number, Manufacturer, Description, and Internal Part Number. Use the Add Image button on the drawing to add a picture of the tool.

Adding Tools to Your Designs

Tools can be added to Harnesses, Systems, and Devices:

  • Press Tool in the Parts section of the Insert ribbon. In a Harness, choose the components that use the tool (or the Harness itself), then press Select Tool... to pick the tool.
  • Right-click on the Top Level drawing, or on selected components in a Harness, and select Add Tool...
  • Right-click the Tools folder in the Design Assembly and select Add Tool...

Tools can also be added to a Configuration of a Connector, Splice, Ferrule, Terminal, Diode, or Resistor. The tool is then added automatically wherever that configuration is applied.

The Tools Table

Each Harness, System, and Device has a Tools tabular output, included in your PDF exports and printouts. You can also show a Tools Table on the Top Level drawing: right-click an empty area of the drawing and check Show Tools Table. Right-click the table and select Table Properties... to change how it looks.

The Tools Table lists each unique tool once, with the following columns: Id, Type, Manufacturer, Part Number, IPN, Description, and Usage. The Usage column shows where each tool is used, as a list of reference designators, or "Harness" for tools added to the Harness itself.

Tools are listed in the Tools Table only. They do not appear in the Bill of Materials.

Editing the Tools Table

Press Edit Tools in the Utilities section of the Home ribbon to open the Edit Tools Table dialog, which works like editing the Bill of Materials:

  • Check or uncheck the Include box to include or exclude a tool from the table.
  • Drag and drop to reorder tools, and press Renumber to renumber their Ids.
  • Press Sort Tools Table... to sort by one or more columns, optionally moving included items to the top and renumbering after sorting.
  • In the Top Level Table tab, choose the columns shown on the Top Level drawing, and whether to show the title and alternate row colors.
